A

Acupressure – A healing art based on ancient Japanese and Chinese medicine. A practitioner puts pressure on specific points on the body with his or her fingers in order to relieve pain and discomfort, prevent tension-related ailments, and promote good health.

Acupuncture – The Chinese practice of gently inserting fine needles into the body at specific points to cure disease, relieve pain and balance the energy systems of the body.

Applied Kinesiology –A form of diagnosis using muscle testing to find out how the body is functioning and to determine the best therapy. Therapies used may include joint manipulation, myofascial techniques, cranial techniques, meridian therapy, reflex procedures, nutrition and dietary management, and treatment of environmental sensitivities.

Aromatherapy – The use of essential oils extracted from plants and herbs to treat conditions ranging from infections and skin disorders to immune deficiencies and stress. Essential oils are widely used throughout Europe and a system of Medical Aromatherapy is currently practiced in France.

Ayurveda - This is Knowledge of Life and Health. It is a complete natural healing system that promotes balance and bliss in the human physiology by awakening biological intelligence – through individual programs of diet, herbs, lifestyle and more – based on your own constitution.

Bodywork – The term bodywork refers to therapies such as massage, deep tissue manipulation, movement awareness, and energy balancing, which are employed to improve the structure and functions of the human body. Bodywork in all its forms helps to reduce pain, soothe injured muscles, stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation, and promote deep relaxation and enable the body to rally its own recuperative powers.

Bowen Technique – A therapeutic approach originating in Australia. Through a series of gentle movements, Bowen stimulates the autonomic and central nervous systems in such a way that causes structural and energetic changes in the body.

CranioSacral Therapy – A holistic, hands-on technique involving gentle manipulation of the bones of the skull, the underlying meningeal membranes, and the nerve endings in the scalp. A practitioner is able to “listen” with their hands to what is called the cranial rhythmic impulse, which runs throughout our bodies.

Coaching – Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve performances and enhance the quality of their lives. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client and to provide support to enhance the skills, resources and creativity inherent in the client.

Colonics, Colon Hydrotherapy – A cleansing technique utilizing gentle, warm-water washing of the colon (large intestine.)

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) – CSA is a movement to bring farm producers and community members into a more direct and cooperative relationship. Community “members” subscribe to a weekly share of produce from a local farm, which is delivered to convenient distribution sites. This relationship facilitates strong financial support for the small farm and provides members with fresh, often organically grown produce.

Detoxification – Each year people are exposed to thousands of toxic chemicals and pollutants in the earth’s atmosphere, water, food and soil. These pollutants manifest themselves in a variety of symptoms, including decreased immune function, neurotoxicity, hormonal dysfunction, psychological disturbances and even cancer. Detoxification therapy helps to rid the body of chemicals and pollutants and can facilitate a return to health.

Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) – Chiropractic is a health care system concerned with the preservation and restoration of health, focusing particular attention on maintaining the integrity of the nervous system by correcting subluxations. Subluxations are functional, structural and pathological changes in joints that influence organ systems function and general health through nervous system disturbance. In addition to adjusting the spine, chiropractors may use a variety of therapies, including extremity and cranial adjusting, muscle therapies, nutrition, exercises and lifestyle counseling.

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) – Doctor who is trained in allopathic medicine, the specific term for standard Western medicine. Training focuses on the scientific study of the structure and functioning of the human body, disease pathology, surgery and drug therapies.

Doctor of Naturopathy (N.D.) – Naturopathic medicine is an approach to health and healing that recognizes the integrity of the whole person. By closely working with their patients, naturopathic doctors are strongly invested in prevention. When illness occurs, the emphasis of treatment is through the stimulation, enhancement and support of the inherent healing capacity of the person.

Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) – Osteopathy is an established and recognized system of diagnosis and treatment, which lays its main emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body. Osteopathic physicians are licensed to prescribe medicines and perform surgery, but often use alternative or natural treatments as well, including osteopathic manipulations of the body structure.

EFT (Emotional Freesom Techinque)  – EFT is based on the understanding that imbalances in the body's energy system affect one's personal psychology.  Correcting these imblances by tapping on certain body locations often brings about immediate release.

EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful new method of doing psychotherapy that works on the physiological and emotional basis of problems to facilitate change. Although EMDR started out as a treatment for trauma, it had been applied to a number of conditions including phobias, chronic pain and grief. EMDR also facilitates the development of success strategies. It uses Bi-lateral stimulation in a specific protocol for lasting results.

Feldenkrais Method® – is named after the originator Moshe Feldenkrais, physicist and educator. His teachings are recognized as a dynamic methodology to improve neuromuscular control and biomechanical efficiency. It integrates both mind and body to achieve coordination, balance and performance through movement sessions. The Method can help to alleviate pain and achieve greater function.

Feng Shui – An ancient Chinese practice. Based on the five elements and yin and yang energies, Feng Shui seeks to align our physical environment to bring the elements and energies into harmonious balance. Use of colors, placement of furniture and natural objects are all part of the Feng Shui process.

Flow Alignment and Connection ™ – FAC is a form of energy bodywork that opens a doorway of communication between you and the light of your soul By entering these states of higher flow, you are better able to make decisions with clarity and wisdom.

Guided Imagery – Uses the power of the mind to bring about healing. It is in the body-mind where we hold perceptions of the past, in the form of emotions and images. Through imagery we can disengage beliefs that interfere with a healthy life.

Herbalist – Both the Western and Eastern forms of herbalism emphasize the study and use of naturally occurring substances in the treatment and prevention of illness. Modern Western herbalists draw on the herbal traditions of Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Holistic Counseling – A counseling approach that focuses on the whole self, feelings, thoughts, and how these are connected to the body.

Holistic Medicine – That form of medicine which focuses on (a) personal management of one’s health, (b) the human body’s ability to heal itself, and (c) balancing the body, mind, and spirit with the

Homeopathy – A medical practice of treating like with like; treating an illness with a substance that produces the same symptoms as those displayed by the person who is ill. Homeopathy sees the symptoms as the body’s reaction against the illness as it overcomes it and seeks to stimulate and not suppress this reaction.

Hypnotherapy – Hypnotic techniques can induce everything from a light to a heavy hypnotic state to help a client overcome psychological or physical problems. From helping people to overcome a craving for cigarettes to managing chronic pain from an illness or accident, trained hypnotherapists work a wide variety of problems. Hypnosis is focused attention in a state of relaxation.

Movement, Movement Education – A broad range of movement approaches used to promote physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Western movement therapies, such as Feldenkrais, developed out of the realm of dance, physical therapy, psychology and bodywork. Since movements are related to thoughts and feelings, movement therapy can also bring about changes in attitude and emotions. People report an increase in self-esteem and an emotional openness leading to greater creativity.

Reflexology – The application of pressure, stretch and movement to the feet and hands to effect corresponding parts of the body. Reflexologists view the feet, ears and hands as a mirror image of the body. By applying technique, a reflexologist can break up patterns of stress in other parts of the body. Stress is a barrier to the body’s return to a normal state of equilibrium.

Reiki – A therapy based on Eastern concepts of energy flow and the seven energy centers in the human body. The purpose of treatment is to heal emotional, spiritual, and physical pain through the transmission of universal life energy, called “ki” in Japanese. It is believed that “ki” flows throughout the universe, and that Reiki connects humans in a more direct way to this universal source. Reiki is used for the healing of animals as well as people.

Rolfing® Structural Integration – Rolfing is a holistic, hands-on, deep tissue modality that manipulates and changes the myofascial system throughout the body. Through 10 progressive treatments, a client’s posture and structure is reorganized within the field of gravity.

Shamanism – A system of healing based on spiritual practices present in most indigenous cultures. The shaman acquires knowledge, wisdom and spiritual power from personal helping spirits encountered on journeys into other realities. They return with vital information about healing. Shiatsu – Shiatsu is a Japanese form of physical therapy and therapeutic massage, based on traditional Chinese medicine. It combines massage, gentle physical manipulation, and pressure along channels or rivers of energy called meridians.

SoundTherapy/Vibrational Healing – A range of therapies in which sound is used to treat physical and mental conditions based on the theory that all of life vibrates, including people’s bodies. Treatment by sound waves is believed to restore that healthy balance to the body. The healing sound is transmitted to the affected area of the body and may be produced by any number of methods including voice, chanting, bowls, drums, bell, tuning forks and/or music.

Swedish Massage – Swedish massage involves the use of oils on the skin, and hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial layers of the muscles to improve mental and physical health. Active or passive movement of the joints may also be part of the massage. The benefits of Swedish massage include increased blood circulation, mental and physical relaxation, reduction of stress, decreased muscle tension and improved range of motion.

Therapeutic Touch – A non-invasive, holistic approach to healing that stimulates the receiver’s own recuperative powers. It is a modern form of laying-on-of-hands, often used by nurses. It is based on principles of an energy exchange between people. It is most useful to reduce or eliminate pain, promote healing, and elicit a relaxation response.

Trager® - A gentle, non-intrusive, psychologically grounded physical approach to muscle relaxation, focusing on the integration of the mind and body. It uses a combination of hands-on tissue mobilization, relaxation and movement reeducation called Mentastics.
